Assistant Nurse Managers are registered nurses who are responsible for the operation of the unit over a specific time period. The Assistant Nurse Manager must have a strong foundation of clinical knowledge and skills on which to base judgments and make decisions, organizing abilities to direct tasks and operations, and interpersonal skills to facilitate communication and the work of others. The Assistant Nurse Manager accepts the responsibility for, and is accountable for, his/her own nursing practice. The Assistant Nurse Manager also seeks out and pursues opportunities for learning and assumes responsibility for their own self-development. Registered nurses must be knowledgeable and skillful in performing the Assistant Nurse Manager role. A registered nurse who assumes the role of Assistant Nurse Manager also assumes the responsibility inherent to the role. Three fundamental responsibilities for Assistant Nurse Manager include planning, coordinating, and evaluating unit activities.

In addition, the Assistant Nurse Manager identifies and implements nursing interventions and evaluates results for a wide variety of patient populations, directs and acts as resource to other members of the nursing team as assigned and promotes compliance and support for policies. The primary responsibilities for this position consist of providing total, comprehensive, continuous and patient centered care which includes: assessing, documenting, planning, implementing, teaching, developing, and evaluating a comprehensive nursing plan of care; delivering direct patient care; ensuring patient satisfaction; training and delegating duties; and adhering to University policies and procedures as well as federal, state and local regulations.

Autonomous nursing care is the ability of a nurse to assess and provide nursing actions as appropriate for patient care populations based on competence, professional expertise, and knowledge. The nurse is expected to practice autonomously consistent with American Nurses' Association Standards of Practice and Professional Performance. Independent judgment is expected to be exercised within the context of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches to patient care.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Three (3) years recent experience in any of the following areas: Hospital inpatient leadership (supervisor/manager), transfer center, ICU/critical care, house supervision, or emergency department
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing
  • Experience in training and mentoring staff
  • Experience in managing multiple priorities involved with a patient care unit
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language
  • Ability to utilize medical terminology appropriately
  • Knowledge of current trends in nursing
  • Commitment to excellence in patient care
  • Effective interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrates accountability and professionalism
  • Adapts to change in a positive, professional and productive manner
  • Knowledge of legal implications in clinical practice and documentation

  • Ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care, taking into consideration protective interventions, development (behavioral and physical) and physiological characteristics specific to the patients
  • Knowledge and proficient in the use of health care technology within specialty area
  • Familiarity with EPIC, Web scheduler, and all Microsoft Office programs

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, or in lieu of a BSN, must have five (5) years of recent experience in any of the following: Hospital inpatient leadership (supervisor/manager), transfer center, ICU/critical care, house supervision, or emergency department
  • Master's Degree, or equivalent experience/training.

Department Description

The UCDH Transfer Center assists in the coordination of transferring patients by ground, helicopter, and fixed wing. Our goal is to ensure all patients receive the right level of care when time, speed, and skill are critical. The services we can provide access to include, but are not limited to, the following: STEMI, Burns, Cardiac, Labor & Delivery, Neuro/Stroke, PICU, NICU and Trauma. The purpose of the Transfer Center Department is to simplify the process of getting a patient transferred to UCO, to the right specialists, to the right level of care, and at the right time.

Under the supervision and direction of the PFMC Director, the clinical supervisory position oversees the day-to-day administrative and supervisory functions of the UCDH TC including, but not limited to, supervision and education of staff, develop and implement department protocols, policies and procedure in accordance with current Federal and State regulations and guidelines, budget assistance, communication, and transfer and transport operations. This position acts as a working supervisor, requires flexibility in scheduling and support for the Transfer Center staff. The Transfer Center Supervisor works in collaboration with the PFMC Director, Executive Directors/Administrators on Duty (AOD), Chief Medical Officer/Physician Advisors, Nursing Supervisors, and others to manage and Implement the strategic plan for the department as assigned.
