***This position is open to students of Loma Linda University School of Nursing only. All students must be registered in course number NRSG 399 and must obtain recommendation from professors. This position will be in LLUCH-Children's.*** Job Summary: The Nurse Extern performs age-specific (adolescent, young adult) and developmentally appropriate patient care activities under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) preceptor in the fast paced environment; performs only those duties/skills previously learned in nursing school with proof of competency; follows Loma Linda University Children's Hospital (LLUCH), a Magnet Recognized large tertiary academic medical center with level one trauma designation, policies, protocols, techniques, and guidelines designated by the Board of Registered Nurses for work-study courses. Assists RN preceptor in performing the nursing process (assessment, care planning, intervention, evaluation) in a dynamic environment and in accordance with LLUCH's established Professional Practice Model (Duffy's Quality Caring Theory) to achieve proficient individualized physical, psychosocial and spiritual wellness and provide compassionate bereavement support as needed. Maintains open communication with RN preceptor, takes directions well and follows through with assignments. Keeps RN preceptor informed regarding patient requests and status, reporting patient observations indicating complications or impending urgent situations Functions within the scope of practice of an unlicensed member of the multidisciplinary health care team. Exhibits professionalism in dress, attitude and clinical practice; utilizes interpersonal skills to maximize customer service in a manner that supports the service excellence initiative, safe patient care, and professionalism; contributes to a work environment of caring and cooperation among a culturally diverse workforce and patient population.
