The staff II Clinical pharmacist is responsible for directing and maintaining drug therapy across the continuum of care, providing comprehensive service based monitoring on select services, as well as focused monitoring in the areas of supportive care/symptom management, antimicrobial management, anticoagulation, and parenteral nutrition therapy. The Staff II Clinical pharmacist continuously seeks out interventions by making rounds with the medical teams and offering suggestions on individualized medication regimens. The pharmacist is an integral member of the health care team, also contributing to drug distribution activities, providing drug information, serving as a preceptor to pharmacy students and residents, conducting clinical research, and participating in department and hospital committees, task forces and work groups. They foster excellent interdepartmental relationships and provide quality and cost effective pharmaceutical care to all patients, employees and medical staff of UCDMC.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Applicants are encouraged to upload license and certification if required of the position.
  • California Pharmacist License eligible and possess a valid license at the time of hire.
  • Completion of a PGY1 Acute Care Residency or a minimum of 3 years of inpatient, clinical pharmacy experience.
  • Doctor of Pharmacy Degree (PharmD) or equivalent experience.
  • Complete working knowledge of, and skill and experience to apply practices, principles and techniques of patient care related to area of expertise.
  • Working knowledge of regulations and safety requirements for safe handling, preparation and administration of hazardous drugs.
  • Thorough understanding and competency with aseptic technique and safe handling of hazardous medications.
  • Demonstrated mathematical skills sufficient to accurately perform pharmacy calculations.
  • Ability to review and assess appropriateness/safety of physician's orders for complex regimens.
  • Decision-making skills to independently exercise delegated authority to take action, and to recognize when it is appropriate to seek assistance from others when limits of delegated authority have been reached.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Board Certification (e.g. BCPS) or equivalent preferred.
  • Hospital pharmacy operations experience, comprehensive knowledge of hospital practice is preferred.
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn health system regulatory and accreditation standards.
  • Previous experience with data collection and analysis and application to performance improvement. Experience with EPIC or other CPOE systems preferred.

Department Description

The Pharmacy Inpatient department is responsible for a wide range of services to patients, patient care areas, and other Hospital, Health System and Academic departments. The Clinical Staff II Pharmacist position focuses on inpatient care with an emphasis in a variety of patient care areas (e.g. Infectious Disease, Critical Care, Cardiology, Oncology, Pediatrics, Pain and Palliative Care, Nutrition Support). The Staff II Clinical pharmacist will work primarily in the inpatient setting; cover select specialty services and provide distribution support to hospitalized patients.

Work Environment

California license at time of hire. The position will include primarily evening shifts and rotating weekend shifts with the opportunity to pick up day shifts based on department need and availability. Employees hired into this position will have exposure to hazardous drugs and must follow institutional policies regarding required personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe handling of hazardous drugs. Candidate will be required to work, days evenings, weekends and holidays. May be required, to work' occasional night shift base on needs of department.
