Job Summary

The Clinic Nurse 2 provides a broad range of professional functions involving nursing care that emphasizes the use of appropriate skills, knowledge, and abilities to assure the comfort, safety, and well-being of all patients. The Clinical nurse functions as part of a team effort and their practice must reflect a balance and understanding of patient care needs and efficient clinic operations.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS) is a division of Student Academic Affairs. SHCS's mission is to optimize the physical and mental health of students in order to help them achieve academic success, personal development and lifelong wellness. To accomplish this mission, we: tailor our services to the unique needs of a diverse and multi-cultural student community, continuously evaluate and improve services to offer comprehensive, high-quality care, and strive to create a healthy and caring campus culture. SHCS staff (nurses, administrative staff, physicians, nurse practitioners, physicians, dietitian, counselors and psychiatrists) work collaboratively to provide integrated care to UCSF students.

Required Qualifications


  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree and the legal requirements to practice as a Registered Nurse as determined by the California Board of Registered Nursing and six months of clinical experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
  • Current and valid CA RN license.
  • Minimum of BSN degree and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • BLS certificate.

Preferred Qualifications


  • 3+ years of recent patient care experience in family practice, specialty ambulatory care, or college health setting.
  • Experience with routine infectious disease surveillance, assessments, and care plans.
  • Experience with telephone and in-person clinical triage and advice services.
  • Must be very well-organized and able to multitask.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with nurses, doctors, nurse practitioners, counseling staff, and other administrative staff.
  • Ability to obtain an adequate medical history and symptoms of patients/students.
  • Experience with a young adult population.
  • Travel Medicine certification.
  • Infection Control certification.
  • AACN Certification in Ambulatory Care.
  • Experience in meeting accreditation standards.
  • Demonstrates flexibility in work schedules and daily assignments.

License/Certification


  • Current and valid CA RN license.
  • Minimum of BSN degree and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • BLS certificate.
