Commercial Lines Underwriter, Middle Market- Hybrid

Encova Insurance has an opening for a Commercial Lines Underwriter, Middle Market accounts for either our Pittsburgh, PA or Columbus, Ohio office. This role will have the option to work a flexible hybrid schedule with days in office each week. We can hire at multiple seniority levels depending on candidate qualifications.

This position will report to Vice President and Business Director, Commercial Lines.

JOB OBJECTIVE:

Manage the profitability and growth of the assigned commercial lines portfolio. Ensure excellent customer service and timely responsiveness to independent agents for their commercial lines' accounts.Develop profitable growth opportunities through constructive relationships with our agency partners.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Accept or reject commercial lines accounts that fall outside of straight through processing rules through exposure identification and risk analysis, including:
    • understanding all exposures that might cause a policy to incur losses;
    • conservatively assessing the likelihood of any exposure actually causing a loss and the probable cost if it does;
    • setting a premium that, on average, would deliver a profit after both prospective loss costs and operating expenses are covered;
    • be willing to walk away if the appropriate premium cannot be obtained.
  • Apply discretionary pricing appropriately based on the account exposures, predictive model indications and your letter of authority.
  • Determine acceptability of revision requests that fall outside straight through processing rules and communicate how the revision will be handled to the Associate Underwriter.
  • Maintain knowledge of and observe the company underwriting guidelines in the processing of commercial lines accounts.
  • Promote effective relationships and encourage continued use of our company products and technology.
  • Communicate all underwriting decisions or changes on coverage, limits, exposures and/or pricing, discussing alternatives with agents as needed.
  • Communicate underwriting decisions and interpretations to the agency manager and other team members, as necessary.
  • Provide support to appointed agents by serving as a resource for underwriting questions.
  • Maintain user knowledge of all internal and agent facing technology for commercial lines and assist agents and producers with technology as needs arise.
  • Regularly utilize analytics dashboards to monitor and adjust the drivers of profitability and growth for your assigned account portfolio.
  • Take ownership and responsibility for your work and team goals.
  • In collaboration with your manager, maintain an individual development plan and identify and recommend the best method(s) for developing required skills.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

  • Maintain an awareness of the current objectives and initiatives of Encova Insurance.
  • Maintain an understanding of all products offered by Encova Insurance and be able to guide agents to the appropriate contact for needs outside of commercial lines.
  • Travel to various locations to support business objectives whenever necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Interpersonal skills are required including the ability to demonstrate professionalism, adaptability, accountability, collaboration and problem solving.
  • A Bachelor's degree or equivalent in work experience required.
  • Up to two years of commercial insurance experience is desired.
  • Insurance designations or insurance education course work (i.e., AINS-Associate in General Insurance) strongly preferred.
