Position description

The University of California, San Diego, Department of Pediatrics (http://pediatrics.ucsd.edu) in the Division of Nephrology and Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego (RCHSD) (http://www.rchsd.org) are committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body. We are seeking to fill the position of Division Chief of Pediatric Nephrology. The Department is interested in leaders who have a national reputation in academic basic, translational, or clinical research.

Faculty members in the Division of Pediatric Nephrology are currently involved in basic science, clinical and translational research, as well as quality improvement initiatives. The Division's research is currently funded by the National Institutes of Health, charitable Foundations, and the Pharmaceutical Industry. Faculty participate in national collaborations including NAPRTCS, CKiD, SCOPE, and PRNC. Division faculty members are actively engaged in the training of UCSD medical students and pediatric residents. The Division has a long-standing ACGME-accredited pediatric nephrology fellowship program and currently has three fellows.

The Comprehensive Kidney Care Center at RCHSD houses the general nephrology, transplant, and dialysis clinics and a five-station pediatric dialysis unit. Activities include shared care for 15-25 chronic hemo- and peritoneal dialysis patients and 10-15 kidney transplant recipients per year, as well as CRRT, and apheresis programs. RCHSD is the only free-standing children's hospital in the San Diego region with 511 beds including a level IV NICU, level I trauma center, cardiac ICU with an active cardiac transplant program, and a bone marrow transplant program. Beyond the main RCHSD campus, we also provide consultative services at the UCSD NICU at Jacobs Medical Center in La Jolla, Sharp Mary Birch, Kaiser-Permanente, and Rady satellite clinics in northern San Diego County and Riverside County. The Division of Nephrology has been consistently ranked in the top 30 in the Nation by the US News and World Report and most recently ranked 18th.

The Division Chief of Nephrology will report to the Department Chair of pediatrics and will be responsible for achieving the Division's strategic, clinical, academic, operational, and financial goals by providing leadership, quality oversight, and direction for members of the Division. The Division Chief will define the scope of practice for their division consistent with the mission and goals of UC San Diego, Children's Specialists of San Diego (CSSD), and Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego. The Division Chief will also ensure that the mission and values of all entities are recognized, understood, supported, and enforced. The Division Chief will collaborate with leadership to create and seek new initiatives to further the mission that can bring value to all entities and its patients, both within and external to their specialty. In collaboration with the Department Chair and RCHSD Clinical leadership, this effort will include defining appropriate patient populations to be served, as well as executing strategic initiatives. The Division Chief will shape the future of the operational and academic initiatives of the division and will strengthen relationships across divisions. The Division Chief will be expected to contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and play a leadership role in advancing UC San Diego's commitment to achieving excellence and diversity.
