Position description

The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), Department of Laboratory Medicine is seeking two full-time Medical Microbiologists for the Clinical Laboratories at the UCSF hospitals. The positions are at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor levels in the Health Sciences Clinical, Clinical X or in Residence series, depending on the relative balance of clinical versus research desired by the candidate. All appointments also require strong commitment to Pathology resident teaching. Clinical/translational research or other creative scholarly activities would be expected for applicants in the Clinical X series, while applicants for in Residence positions are expected to have a strong, extramurally funded, research program. Applicants must hold either an M.D., Ph.D. or M.D/Ph.D. dual degrees. All M.D. applicants must be eligible for California medical licensure at the time of appointment. A minimum of 2 years of experience in clinical medical microbiology or clinical laboratory service is required. Residents or fellows who are completing formal training in medical microbiology are also encouraged to apply. Candidate's CV or cover letter must state required qualifications (or if pending) upon submission.

The successful candidates will be members of a team of medical microbiologists that serve as medical directors in the China Basin Clinical laboratories at UCSF. The microbiology service is extremely robust, involving traditional microbiologic diagnostics supplemented by large efforts in molecular methods for Infectious Disease testing. The clinical microbiology laboratory is staffed by 30 CLS technicians with 6 CLS supervisors (including the senior supervisor), 5 specialists and 20 lab assistants. The laboratory operates 24/7 and offers over 80 different microbiologic tests. The lab performs over 300,000 tests per year. The medical directors of the clinical microbiology laboratory work closely with colleagues in the Infectious Disease division of the Dept. of Medicine, to provide timely diagnostic support for UCSF patients. The microbiology laboratory also serves as a reference laboratory for molecular infectious disease testing (including metagenomic sequencing) and helps support a number of microbiology research programs at UCSF. Ensuring the continued growth and innovation in clinical medical microbiology is a paramount goal for these positions.

An interest in education and teaching is preferred. Development of translational and collaborative research projects in any area of microbiology is preferred as well. Applicants with a strong program in basic microbiology research are also welcome, though service in the clinical microbiology laboratory is the primary responsibility of these positions. Salary and title will be commensurate with the applicant's experience and training.

Please apply online at https://aprecruit.ucsf.edu/JPF04177, with a CV, cover letter, a statement of contributions to diversity, and three references.
