The Great Falls Tribune, part of the USA TODAY Network, is seeking a reporter to cover prep sports and more in Great Falls and north central Montana.
The ideal candidate will have a passion for high school athletics and seek out human-interest stories and enterprise work to tell the stories of players, coaches, and fans in Montana.
The reporter will be primarily responsible for covering sports for the two largest high schools in our area, Great Falls High and C.M. Russell High, while also looking for story opportunities in rural communities in the region.
The successful candidate will be able to report confidently about football, basketball, rodeo, track and field, softball and several other sports. The reporter will be expected to turn quick stories when covering games and events while also balancing enterprise and feature work.
Responsibilities
- Act as a public ambassador through community outreach and connect with readers through social media.
- Engage with coaches, players, and community members to have a finger on the pulse of what is most important to our readers.
- Write in-depth stories that highlight personal stories as they relate to issues and successes in sports.
- Turn quick stories for digital publication the night of events to inform readers.
- Adjust schedule as needed to accommodate some games and tournament schedules.
- Have a strong understanding of social media use as a means to garner a following and further engage with our audience.
- Recognize newsworthy events and trends and understand how to connect with our audience on multiple platforms.
- Ability to prioritize coverage based on digital metrics.
- Able to work occasional late nights or weekends as needed by the news cycle.
- Adept at taking photos and video and the ability to file quickly across platforms: mobile, desktop and social media.Performs other duties as necessary.

- Ability to produce top-notch journalism.

Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in communication, journalism, or equivalent in experience and education
- 1-5 years experience covering sports with advanced storytelling techniques on multiple platforms.
- Must have technical skills - understanding use of metrics, Microsoft Office Suite, videography, and photography.
- Must have required skills - social media, advanced storytelling, advanced analytical ability, interpersonal skills, time management, and interpersonal skills.
- This role requires a valid drivers license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
- Employment is contingent on passing a post-offer pre-employment background check, motor vehicle record check & urinalysis drug screen.
