Position Summary |
The Department of Human Services & Counseling invites applications for a full-time, tenure track faculty member to teach in the Fire and Emergency Response Administration (
FERA) program. The mission of the
MSU Denver
FERA degree program is to promote higher education and to enhance the value of the fire and emergency response professions in order to promote a safer community and to reduce the loss of life, property, and the number of physical and emotional casualties from fire and other life-threatening events.
Fire and Emergency Response courses at
MSU Denver are part of a nationally standardized curriculum based on the National Fire Academy-Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education (
FESHE) Model Curriculum and are intended to meet higher education criteria set forth by the National Fire Protection Association (
NFPA) and the International Association of Fire Chiefs (
IAFC).
MSU Denver is one of only a few college and university programs in the country to carry the "Certificate of Recognition" from the National Fire Academy-Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education for every
FESHE course offered by the university.

Duties/Responsibilities |
Teaching and Advising
(50 - 80%)
Teaching involves activities that impart knowledge and critical thinking skills to students. It includes preparing for courses assigned, assessing student progress, conducting curricular review, curricular development, including the use of new technology and formats (classroom only, hybrid, and online only), as appropriate. Teaching load will also include supervising
FERA internships and coordinating site visits with field supervisors and students; it also includes coordinating service learning projects with
FERA faculty, students, and community partners. Advising involves activities specifically directed to assist the student in choosing career options, choosing a degree program, successfully completing their degree, obtaining employment or graduate school placement, and keeping informed of University policies.
Professional Development
(0 - 50%)
Professional development is a process which includes activity that brings enrichment to the faculty member and the profession and results in new material that can be presented to students, as well as new skills which benefit the University community and are related to the faculty member's assigned responsibilities. It may include investigative work or basic research; infusion of isolated facts with meaning and perspective; making connections across disciplines; placing the specialized in broad context; making knowledge broadly accessible; the solving of problems through the use of scholarly expertise, pedagogical research, creative exploration and production; and methods for the transformation and extension of knowledge, so long as such activities enhance the faculty member's teaching and/or the faculty members ability to perform their assigned responsibilities. Specifically, professional development could entail attending professional conferences, presenting at conferences, and/or publishing.
Service

Service might include contributions to the department, the college, the university, and/or the community. Department-level service includes program development and program review. Service also involves contributions to the improvement welfare of the University at any level, and typically unpaid public service to the community or professional organization which the University. |
Required Qualifications |
- Master's degree
- A minimum of three years' experience as a chief officer in the fire service, law enforcement, or a field related to fire and emergency response administration
- Previous experience teaching at the college or university level

Preferred Qualifications |
- Previous experience teaching at the college or university level in a FERA-related field
- Previous experience working with community partners or working with interns and field supervisors
