The News-Press, part of the USA TODAY Network, is looking for an experienced reporter to take over one of our premiere positions: Growth and Development reporter. The successful candidate will know how to manage time well, develop diverse sources and report on growth and development in one of the nations fastest-growing areas. Besides telling our audience about new developments, major store and office leases and teardowns, the ideal candidate will also cover a myriad of economic issues, such as unemployment, career programs, the housing market and tourism. The reporter will write a weekly In the Know column about local real estate: large land sales, future shopping centers, whats being built and whats being torn down for something new. The column and stories will focus mainly on growth and development, which is one of Southwest Floridas most critical beats driving audience, engagement and subscriptions. The position includes writing primarily about whats happening in two Florida counties, Lee and Collier, which include Cape Coral, the ninth-largest city in the state, and well-heeled beach areas such as Sanibel and Naples. The position makes you part of the USA TODAY Network Florida, and ample opportunities to work with other journalists statewide. The candidate will also work with the senior manager of content and digital partners to evaluate what's working and what's not and develop new strategies to grow audience and satisfy audience needs. For the "In the Know" column, the candidate will be taking over a successful branded column about growth and development and find ways to continue to grow and promote that brand. Flexibility and adaptability are essential skills in this position. You may be asked to cover breaking news one day and be put on a team working on a longer-term major enterprise project the next day.
The candidate should have a bachelors or masters degree in journalism, communications or a related field; also a minimum of three years experience in reporting and writing news stories. Business writing experience preferred but not required. The job requires basic video skills to spotlight new developments, such as standup videos on the scene of a new development, text-on-image videos using Wochit or iMovie, etc. Also someone who will develop a great working relationship with our visual staff. Proficiency in social media, including Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Reddit. Ability to juggle several stories at once ranging from dailies to major enterprise stories so that there is always a steady flow and variety of columns, stories and enterprise. Ability and willingness to produce content in alternative forms (listicles, Q&As, narratives, photo galleries, video that are tailored to the right platform (mobile, desktop, social media) to best reach the audience. Able to use metrics to respond to user demand and reader interest.
