To connect with us, visitwww.gannett.com Deputy Sports Editor The Des Moines Register/desmoinesregister.com, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, seeks a dynamic, results-driven deputy sports editor to lead reporters in producing compelling, impactful work that will be go-to content for our sports audience. The deputy sports editor will have primary responsibility for directing high school sports coverage for the Register and three other Iowa dailies, in Ames, Iowa City and Burlington. Aside from tournament time, emphasis will be less on game coverage than on producing exclusive analysis, profiles, compelling storytelling and other enterprise that will attract a fan base and grow digital subscriptions. The Register also provides blanket coverage of University of Iowa and Iowa State University sports. This position offers the unique opportunity to assist in directing sophisticated coverage of teams competing in two of the premier conferences in college sports: the Big Ten and Big 12. Coach is a defining description for this job: It requires a mentor who can help reporters improve their newsgathering and writing skills, cultivate deep sourcing and take on ever-more sophisticated work, including explanatory and investigative reports. This editor will use metrics and audience research to guide decisions about covering topics and issues that will drive digital audience growth. A successful candidate will embrace the latest developments in video, digital technology and social media and will experiment with innovative storytelling approaches to build audience. The job requires a problem solver who is well-organized, can work independently and exercise solid news judgment. Collaboration and teamwork skills are a must; this editor will work closely with a planning desk for both print and digital content and a digital optimization team.
